alienated

Ours Lingages. The internet is my language mother. I speak with a voice that’s not my own, I speak in other voices, not my voice. We are all e-strangers, all nomads that use globish bastard languages. We are the alienated translated (wo)men in-between code and emotion, in-between our wish to be visible and our longing for intimacy. L’entre-deux = void. Can’t we be “with” instead?
Translation is a joy as long as you can accept the imperfections of the result, are willing to learn, to spend time, to pay attention, to take risks and to accept your own incompleteness and glitches. Translation is always failing, faulty, it’s a source for confusion … and discovery. It opens a third language; another in-between, and then a fourth and … Better take nothing for granted and play with it. Be the one not looking at what something is, but at what something can do.
You have to accept (a FEW times). A few times. New language. Let’s try to be “with”.

Electronic Literature Collection, Volume 3

screen-shot-2016-02-18-at-8-52-51-pm-1024x636

Reading Club (2013 – ….) included in
Electronic Literature Collection, Volume 3.

The result is a material representation of the reader’s presence in the text. As the readers type, cut and paste, delete, format, and transform the text, the text becomes a conversational space in which read not just the text but each other’s interventions, guessing each other’s goals as they collaborate, riff, joust, and subvert each other.

February 2016, Cambridge, Massachusetts: Electronic Literature Organization, ISSN: 1932-2016.
Editors : Stephanie Boluk, Jacob Garbe, Anastasia Salter, and Leonardo Flores.

Electronic Literature Collection, Volume 3. 1.0 – Launched February 18, 2016. The core ELC3, complete with works and editorial commentary, launched at the “Matter of Bits” exhibition at Rutgers University Camden. This first iteration is online-only and links to live versions of works currently available on the web, whenever possible.

Italian “translation” of Separation / Séparation

Mauro Carassai and Renata Morresi made an Italian powerpoint and javascript translation (2012) of Separation/Séparation (2002). They didn’t have the flash source codes and so imagined how translation of this piece of E-lit could be done from its experience alone.

Translation, Mutation, Decay.

The powerpoint version is hilarious (after clicking through 184 slides it stops – the poem can’t be read completely).
The javascript version doesn’t work in all browsers and lacks some features, but does give an impression. ( View source: https://bram.org/separation/Javascript_Translation.html )

That’s what time can, will do with a piece of electronic art, I thought.
E-lit also is like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall.

Carassi and Morresi wrote an article about their adventure which appreared as Verbal Disengagements: Translating Language Games in Annie Abrahams’s Separation/Séparation in Translating E-Literature (2015). Eds. Regnauld, Arnaud and Abrioux, Yves. Bibliothèque de l’Université Paris 8 (Saint-Denis, France).
