Kaj misliš s tem? / What do you mean? – sound piece

Sound piece after : On April 17th 2014 there was a performance Kaj misliš s tem? / What do you mean? at Kult3000, Metelkova, Ljubljana, with Annie Abrahams, Martina Rusham, Jana Wilcoxen and Chantal van Mourik.

Annie, Jana, Chantal and Martina wrote text, using only their mothertongue, about their experience of living in a country where they couldn’t speak their monthertongue and had to learn a new language. They used a shared textpad. They translated their text phrase by phrase via Google in Slovenian. The Slovenian text was fed to Alpineon’s TTS software made by Proteus and diffused live to the performance public. Brane Zorman recorded this sound.

Yet another translation into English gave a poem called You have to accept (a FEW times). New language that you can find here.

The soundpiece was presented in the exhibition Mie lahkoo pomagate ? (can you help me ?) from 21 October to 7 November 2014 in Aksioma Project Space, in Ljubljana. Production CONA.

Aksioma Project Space, Ljubljana
Tuesday, 21 October at 20h / opening and presentation. I will also be in the space on the 22nd, 23rd and 24rd from 3pm to 5pm. Recording sound, explaining, chatting.

Production: CONA  institute for contemporary art processing
Coproduction: Aksioma – Institute for Contemporary Art
Residency partner: JSKD and French Institute

The works presented in the exhibition Mie Lahkoo Pomagate? (can you help me?) investigate different attitudes toward language and problematize how its expressivity is structured when placed in a new environment.

The created pieces have an open structure and can be understood as a sort of “hacking”, through which another sphere of what used to be called net art is opened. This other zone is no longer caught in the virtual world, it does not examine its imprints on reality, but cuts through the space of in-betweenness, the real / the virtual, past / present. It calls for a responsible, watchful, and careful entering, reading, acting, reacting, even when we are becoming a witness of a past event, when we are interpreting offered materials, combining, connecting, and understanding them.

Recordings, drawings, a video and a poster of Encounter, edited recordings of Kaj misiliš s tem? What do you mean?, an art book from estranger to e-stranger, a skirt made by Irena Pivka, a deka, a poster from Huong Ngo, a song by Tožibabe, a video of my parents, relax.exe (projection), a chair, a table, a text by Jasmina Založnik, a soundpiece by Brane Zorman, a plant, another plant, another chair, plaster board, text on code and emotions (poster), Iloveyou.exe (copies). What language does it speak?

The exhibition was developed in collaboration with Maja Delak, Mojca Krisch, Huong Ngo, Irena Pivka, Brane Zorman. Thanks to: Milena Gros, Chantal van Mourik, Brida, Martina Ruhsam, Sunčan Stone, Igor Štromajer, Jana Wilcoxen, Jerneja Žganec Gros and Aleš Mihelič – Alpineon razvoj in raziskave, d.o.o

It is not about the project it is about the relation – Talk

Artist talk : It is not about the project it is about the relation.

Intention: A talk about how relations and behaviour are at the core of my artistic work and about what it means to work on an aesthetics of attention and trust. Using examples of my collective writing and online streaming performances I will try to shed light on the liberating aspects of the human messy sides of interaction in online environments.

Talk in the frame of my 4 weeks residency with CONA and JSKD* in Ljubljana, which will be centered around the notion of being an (E)stranger.

estranger

When 12 years old, I went to high school for the first time, I noticed I didn’t speak the same way as the other pupils. I went mute for three days before trying to communicate again. In 1986 I moved from the Netherlands to France and once again I was a ‘stranger’. I was the one who had to learn a new language, who had an accent, who was difficult to understand, the one the others had difficulties paying attention to because she spoke slowly and had bad grammar. I was the ‘broken’ one. But I also was the outsider, the one with distance, the one who didn’t know the rules, and so wasn’t obliged to follow them, the one who could also be free.
So when invited by Cona, to come to Slovenia I decided to go back once more to the position of being a stranger, of creatively playing with this place, of researching its possibilities, beyond it’s handicapping proprieties and make work about that.
