Annie Abrahams

Frauen Theater Festival

Freitag 10.11.2017

16 Uhr        Performance: UNAUSSPRECHBARLICH – Annie Abrahams, (NL/FR) & Helen Varley Jamieson (NZ/GE).

4:30 pm      Forum: Women in movement; the challenge of integration: Body, language and immigration.

Antagon Halle, Orberstrasse 57, Frankfurt am Main.

Ones body and language also create ones identity. The role of the women differs from country to country and region to region. In the present moment of immigration, this silently accepted role suddenly is questioned. How does the concept of the woman change within different countries? How can these women, who are moving away from their homeland, react to this question? How do we, as women, move within the cosmopolitical world? To get to know another culture creates challenges, that we can only face individually.

The performance of the artists Abrahams and Jamieson deals with exactly this experience to live in between different cultures and in other countries.
Invited for a conversation: Annie Abrahams (biologist, net-artist and pioneer of thenetworking performance-art from Netherlands), Helen Varley Jamieson (writer, theatre-maker, digital artist from New Zealand and member of the board of Magdalena Project), Violeta Luna (performative artist and activist from Mexico, living in San Francisco), Ute Bansemir and Ewgenija Weiß (director of „theaterperipherie“).

Meeting Outranspo

Outranspo (Ouvroir de translation potencial) is a motley group of multilingual translators, writers, researchers and musicians who joyously devote themselves to creative approaches to translation. More information here.

Last Friday they invited me to one of their monthly online meetings.

I did a short introduction to my from estranger to e-stranger book (available as .pdf and as paperback), read some fragments from it and then we went to the ReadingClub.

First session : 10 minutes – 3 authors – colors.
Result:

(please wait a few sec before pushing the arrow – the timeline needs to be loaded)

Second session : 10 minutes – 3 authors –  no colors.
Result:
Kein …. recul, keine Ablösragung

Outranspo discovered how, in this interface, an imposed limited number of characters influences the collective reading / writing experience. In the ReadingClub you have to erase to continue to write – in the ReadingClub you are collaborating and fighting at the same time.

Afterwards Chris remarked: “It changes how we relate to writing in time. Instead of seeing writing as an end result you can see it as a permanent present.”
.

(: Outranspo told me I am Outranspo by anticipation. :)

Next performance Unaussprechbarlich
Friday October 14, 21h, PATHOS Theater München in the festival “Magdalena München – In Between”.

The almost random mix of languages (there could be even more, others etc.) seamed to me very European as well as very contemporary. We today live a global Babel everywhere and anytime, in particular on the web and in the social net-works. A basic understanding of foreign languages is not any longer a pre-condition to communicate with each other. We all use on-line translators and Asian people use latin letters to be translated into their letters on the screen. So in your performance the mix of languages and the mix of representations by different media (pronunciation by humans and machines, typing, screening, projection, singing, etc.) transforms the global Babel into a piece of art. This piece of art is fluid, unstable, a collage of mixed layers, intuitive, enlightening, (un-)decodable and funny.

From October 31 till December 23rd 2015 I have been living in Villa Waldberta (Feldafing, Germany). In this period I worked with Helen Varley Jamieson on a project called unaussprechbarlich. We researched the difficulties and joys of communicating in a language that’s not our mothertongue: German.
Information for the performance we wanted to develop was accumulated on unaussprechbarlich.tumblr.com. Anecdotes, academic reflexions, personal stories, literature, artworks, text, text text.

After a try out at Villa Waldberta we did performances in Schwere-Reiter‘s Probaraum (December 4rd) and in Lothringer13‘s Rroom (December 9th).

Helen was sitting at a table where she had two computers, two videoprojectors, a webcam, books and writing material. I was sitting amidst the public. The public heard Helen teaching herself German swearwords (Arschloch, Bergaufbremser) using an online guide to pronounciation (forvo.de). After 5 minutes I started singing Vader Jacob. followed by a personal story (in German) about my experiences with language learning. In the mean time Helen wrote German words related to the news on a paper by hand. This was projected. After my story I went to the microphone and read excerpts of Julia Kristeva’s book Etrangers à nous-mêmes in French. Helen transcribed this text in German in an online translation window, that was projected. The public read the text and the English translation at the same time. When finished Helen started to correct the text. I yelled: a loud cry. Helen continued, I went to a corner, turned my back to the public and started singing a definition of monolinguism ….

This describes the first 20 minutes. If you want to know more here are the Performance Script and Wall Texts in a .pdf.

Here is feedback on the third performance by Christina Maria Pfeifer.

Performance unaussprechbarlich Schwere Reiter.

schwereReiter

Dezember 4 20h Schwere Reiter Proberaum, Dachauer Straße 114, München.
Tram 12, 20, 21, Bus 53, Leonrodplatz. Eintrit 12 / 8 euros.

Externer Berater : Horst Konietzny

Ich bin ein Feldafinger

ichInEinenAnderenZietalterImage from a wall painting at the Villa Waldberta.

For almost two months I’ll be a resident at Villa Walberta in Feldafing near to München. Besides enjoying the beautiful countryside (I am lucky with the weather sofar) I will be working with Helen Varley Jamieson on Unaussprechbarlich : an exploration of how the level of mastery of a language affects attitudes, psychological conditions and political positions. We do this in German, a language we both don’t speak and write very well.

Unaussprechbarlich will also be a performance that negotiates meaning beyond the monolingual condition.
You can follow our research here : unaussprechbarlich.tumblr.com

Villa Walberta is a beautiful and, for me, strange place. A place once owned by a Dutch publisher, called Sijthof, who grafitied the building in 1903 with a painting of an eagle and the words “Altijd Waek Saem” (“always vigilent” but also “always awake together”). After the war it was for 8 years a place for “displaced persons” (DP’s / heimatslose Zivilpersonen) and now I live here with a Slovenian, an Iranian and a Russian translator and a Greek grafik artist.

“Weltweit sind 60 Millionen Menschen auf der Flucht – das besagen die Statistiken des UN-Flüchtlingshilfswerks UNHCR. Es sind Menschen, die vor Bürgerkriegen fliehen, vertrieben wurden oder der Armut entkommen wollen. Seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg waren noch nie so viele Menschen gleichzeitig auf der Flucht.” Source
